about

If you’re playing fetch with a dog it’s more interesting to throw the ball further each time rather than make it easy for him, and that’s how we feel about the sonic progression of Televangelist. It’s darker than anything we’ve released before and presents a side to Idle Hours previously unexplored. The song was born out of a short-lived fascination with the American Televangelism industry, fuelled by late night attempts to escape the YouTube hole - often unsuccessful. Musically, the song takes its lead from the choppy drum rhythm created by a blend of man and machine, influenced by Suede and Primal Scream, while fuzzed-up guitars form the landscape for lyrics of greed, narcissism and exploitation.

lyrics

Speak in your natural tongue
Spread live across the nation
Fed into every home
Designer suit and tie with magenta tone
A CK exorcism

Stare down the gut of the lens
And save me from the clutches
A waste of oxygen
I close my eyes and the satellites
Leave me where I started

(The patron saint of filth on the family screen)
A race to close the eyelids
(A rush of blood to blame on your violent streak)
Jet lagged and uninvited

Late night celebrity guest
Contagious belly laughter
I hope it never ends
(Close knit, tight lipped) circle of friends
Would tell a different story

(The patron saint of filth on the family screen)
A race to close the eyelids
(A rush of blood to blame on your violent streak)
Jet lagged and uninvited
(If Jesus lived he’s fly first class on a free)
Dodge the paparazzi and autographs
(A rush of blood, a flux like a kick in the teeth)
Jet lagged and not feeling myself
