about

Salford quartet Idle Hours release ‘In Lipstick’, the self released single following up from last year's sophomore EP Graphic Silence. Available now, In Lipstick coincides with their anticipated performance at the New Colossus Festival in New York, which marks their international debut appearance. The single brings fuel to burn with guitarist Tom Ashton’s starlit melodies, bassist Alex Needham’s off-kiltered riffs and drummer Jimmy Brown steering the song into new directions as singer/guitarist Jack Waldron speaks of trivial horrors with themes of identity theft by the unlikeliest of criminals.

The music of Idle Hours arrives with immediacy and undertones of dystopia, derived on shared tastes of the UK & NYC 00’s guitar scenes and Kubrickist visuals. The band meticulously map their songs with angular chopping riffs whilst bringing the utmost for melody. Formed in 2019 the DIY band have become synonymous in the North-West music scene with regular appearances at the beloved The Ferret and Manchester circuits.

In Lipstick is the next step in the band's direction, setting off from the motorik ethos brought on their previous releases. It’s the bands most verbally visual piece to date with them sharing “It’s a feeling of detachment from reality, an imposter wears your clothes, uses your identity - it brings anxiety to physical form, all in gest with inanimate objects”. Accompanied with a detective themed music video the band have expanded on their own fictional world away from reality. Working with close friend and producer Leo Craig, In Lipstick was recorded in a way that felt familiar to them, a home studio environment matched with openness to squeeze this song to its fullest possible form.

lyrics

Bought a life size inflatable person
He’s wearing my clothes and using my name
With his life size inflatable girlfriend
Yeah he’s been living the dream while im in bed

Do they know I’m not there
That’s a face drawn in lipstick
Paris rouge in your eyes
Man you’re making her blush
Oh yeah

Who takes control of the fan page when you’re dead and gone
Toms carved in their all time favourite font
I’m deflating the man I wish I was

Bought a life size inflatable person
He’s taken a seat in my favourite chair
No room at the family table so I’ll
take me company elsewhere
Do they know I’m not there
That’s a face drawn in lipstick

Question the science
The experts selling their opinion
The liars refusing to believe
The future is coming
Our basic needs will be forgotten
The fire
These relics won’t survive
The turn of the century
Recorded months ago
Your favourite celebrity host is leaving
Out the side door
Forever
A one way ticket on the atlas agena
A birds eye view of all the carnage to follow
A royal broadcast
Over all of the channels
The fate we’re heading for designed and delivered
Just like they said it would
But my god it feels so good to

Do they know I’m not there
That’s a face drawn in lipstick
Colourblind at the lights is a matter of luck
Oh yeah
